Larry Welk
Larry learned to fly helicopters when he was 19 in Southern California. In 1991, Larry started his career in aerial news gathering in Los Angeles. Larry has covered some of the most well-known news stories from the past two decades here in Southern California, including O.J. Simpsons car chase, the Los Angeles riots, the Northridge earthquake, and the flooding of the Sepulveda basin. While covering the flooding of the Sepulveda basin, Larry spotted a flood victim in the water and jumped from the helicopter in order to rescue a drowning man (with another pilot flying). Larry was commended by the City of Los Angeles for this act of heroism. Years later, Larry was recognized a second time by the City and the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors for heroism in assisting with the rescue of the Fox 11 news helicopter crew after a crash during the 2000 Academy Awards. Larry acted as chief pilot for KCAL-TV and KCBS-TV while reporting for both stations.

In 1998, Larry started Angel City Air, Inc. which provides news helicopter services to KCBS-TV, KCAL-TV, KTLA-TV, along with numerous production companies in Southern CA providing aerials for television and motion pictures. With over 14,000 hours of hours logged, Larry's vast knowledge, skill, and years of experience in the Southern California aviation community have earned him a reputation as a leader in the aerial ENG field. Larry has received many awards for his outstanding service, including a local Emmy award, a national Sports Emmy, and accolades from the National Broadcast Pilots Association, Greater Los Angeles Press Club and many other media and aviation organizations. Larry has been a member of the PHPA since 1990 and was recently nominated and voted President of the PHPA in June of 2011.

From that point on, he was given the chance to learn about helicopters and gain from the experience of others. Morris was invited to become part of the ground support staff for a tour/charter operator at Hawthorne Airport in 2004. Currently, working part time for Los Angeles Helicopters, he is the Operations Supervisor at the Ports O' Call Village in San Pedro, California, as well as being on the Air Operations Teams for several local helicopter shows and events. BJ Miles
BJ Miles started his affair with the lofty heights as a young E-2 in the Coast Guard when he got a morale ride in the back of an HH-65A. That lead to a pursuit of an aviation career with the Coast Guard.
The formative flight years were as a C-130 Loadmaster in Kodiak, Alaska. Working his way through the ranks, BJ went to Officer Candidate School at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT and was commissioned an Ensign at the tender age of 29. This age is important because the cut off age for flight training in Pensacola is 30. Just made it under the wire by 2 months!
BJ earned his Naval Aviator Wings of Gold in February of 2002. His first duty station was Air Station Los Angeles flying the mighty HH-65A Dolphin. Here the fog and the air traffic would serve well as a training location to advance from Co-pilot, to First pilot and eventually Aircraft Commander.
Having enough of the SoCal lifestyle, BJ once again returned to Kodiak, Alaska to deploy with the HH-65B out to the Bering Sea. 3 years of "interesting" flying, finishing his AandP as well as his CFII and collecting many a sea story, BJ again returned to sunny SoCal.
Now a Lieutenant Commander, and flying the MH-65C, BJ focused on Aviation Safety and was awarded the Coast Guard's Safety Officer of the year award in 2010. And it will be here in LA that BJ will retire from the Coast Guard and pursue the civilian side of flying in 2013.
Through it all he has been accompanied by his wife Laura. Although she hails from New Hampshire, she has also taken a liking to SoCal living and is quite content living and working behind the Orange Curtain.
Too busy for kids, they keep themselves occupied with any activity as long as it is outside.

Desiree Horton
Always fascinated by helicopter flight since she was a little girl, Desiree started flying helicopters right out of high school when she was able to work two jobs to allow herself to pay her own way through flight school. Growing up in Los Angeles a heavily populated helicopter community made it easy to take to the skies without ever moving out of the area along with the added benefit of the intrigue to a little girl brought on by daily flights overhead. Always looking skyward and the fact that her father was an airplane pilot made becoming a pilot destined to be in her future. Most of her flying has been here in Los Angeles for her entire 21 year career with many years of contract flying all over the United States for Fire Fighting and Heavy Lift construction contracts. She was the first female to be on an exclusive use Fire Fighting contract in Region 5. She is one of very few women helicopter pilots who contract to the United States Forest Service as a Fire Helicopter Pilot. Desiree has flown tours, traffic watch, charter flights, survey flights, organ donor flights, frost, production, and news in Los Angeles. Along with being a pilot/reporter for various news stations here in Los Angeles throughout her career she is also a member of SAG/Aftra and has flown in many feature films, TV, and commercials in Los Angeles. Her extensive experience in the Los Angeles airspace and connections in the helicopter community add to her value as an active member of PHPA as well as the Public Relations Committee for the organization. Desiree also belongs to HAI, AOPA, and the Whirly-Girls. Desiree currently splits her time between flying news in Los Angeles for KCAL/KCBS as a pilot/reporter and on an exclusive use fire contract in Region 6 in Oregon flying a Bell 205.
